The Nutrigenesis Approach: An Alternative Approach To
Common Female Problems

Introduction:

The most common problems that plague women are premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopausal signs and symptoms associated with the postmenopausal years.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a complex of physical and/or emotional symptoms that occur repetitively in a cyclic fashion before menstruation and that diminish or disappear with menstruation. Typically these cyclic symptoms are sufficiently enough to interfere with work performance and other aspects of life.

Common symptoms of cyclic premenstrual syndrome (PMS) include abdominal bloating, acne, alcohol intolerance, breast engorgement and tenderness, clumsiness, constipation or diarrhea, headache, peripheral edema, weight gain, anxiety, change in libido, depression, fatigue, food cravings (especially salt and sugar), hostility, inability to concentrate, increased appetite, insomnia, irritability, lethargy, mood swings, panic attacks, paranoia, violence towards self and others and withdrawal from others. Most women seek help for PMS in their 30's after 10 or more years of symptoms.

Conventional western medicine usually treat PMS with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox), meclofenamate sodium (Meclomen) or mefenamic acid (Ponstel) to alleviate dysmenorrhea. Sometimes antidepressants are prescribed to deal with the emotional and mental symptoms.

Menopause is the final menstrual period representing the cessation of cyclic function of the ovary, which is manifested by cyclic menstruation. Menopause occurs at a mean age of approximately 51 years. Today's average women in the Western world can expect to live one third of her life in the post-menopausal phase.

Most post-menopausal signs and symptoms are the result from decreased circulating estrogens. Common symptoms include hot flushes, paresthesias, palpitations, cold hands and feet, headaches, vertigo, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, depression, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, night sweats, forgetfulness, and inability to concentrate. Women who have undergone hysterectomy usually experience early post-menopausal signs and symptoms.

For decades, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), usually a combination product of estrogen and progestin, has been hailed to be the gold standard to combat the signs and symptoms brought on by menopause and to decrease the chance of osteoporosis and prevent heart disease in women until July 9, 2002. On this day, The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institute of Health (NIH) has stopped early a major clinical trial of the risk and benefits of estrogen and progestin in healthy menopausal women due to an increased risk of invasive breast cancer. The large multi-center trial, a component of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), also found increase in coronary heart disease, stroke and pulmonary embolism in study participants on estrogen plus progestin compared to women taking placebo pills. There were noteworthy benefits of estrogen plus progestin, including hip fractures and colon cancer, but on balance the harm was greater the benefit. The study, which was scheduled to run until 2005, was stopped after an average follow-up of 5.2 years.

The conclusion is: "The cardiovascular and cancer risks of estrogen plus progestin outweigh any benefits -- and a 26 percent increase in breast cancer risk is too high a price to pay, even if there were a heart benefit. Similarly, the risks outweigh the benefits of fewer hip fracture." For every 10,000 women taking hormones in one year, 31 women become ill with either: heart disease, breast cancer, strokes or blood clots.

About 6 million women in the United States were taking estrogen and progestin therapy. These women either stopped the HRT abruptly and did nothing in its place or they were scrambling for an alternative therapy with or without their doctors' advice.

Alternative Therapy For Premenstrual Syndrome:

Take Nutrigenesis Approach PMS Premenstrual Supplement, one tablet three time a day with meal one week before and during menstrual cycle. May continue to take one tablet daily after menstruation.

Nutrigenesis Approach PMS Premenstrual Supplement Ingredients and Functions:
  • Dong Quai (Angelica): Called "the women's herb" in China, modern research substantiates Dong Quai's effects in regulating uterine function. It is generally employed in in traditional Chinese Medicine as a food (in soup) or as a "tea" for irregular, painful, or meek menstruation, especially when associated with symptoms of PMS (tension, cramps, weakness, etc.). According to extensive clinical trials, Dong Quai has proven to be antibacterial, antifungal, an immuno-stimulant and has exhibited anti-tumor activity.
  • Taurine: Taurine is an amino acid. Vegetarians with unbalanced protein intake may have difficulty manufacturing taurine due to deficiency of methionine or cysteine. It is vital to the proper utilization of sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Taurine functions in electrically active tissue such as the brain and the heart to help stabilize cell membranes. It is used to treat anxiety, hyperactivity, poor brain function, hypoglycemia, epilepsy, hypertension, and seizures. Taurine is also necessary for the chemical reactions that produce normal vision, and deficiency are associated with retinal degeneration.
  • Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA): It is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family. Some women find relief of their PMS symptoms when using GLA supplements. The symptoms that seem to be helped the most are brease tenderness, depression, irritability, swelling and bloating from fluid retention.
  • L-Tyrosine: It is an amino acid (protein building block) that is important to the structure of all proteins in the body. It is also a precursor of several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. L-Tyrosine, through its effect on neurotransmitters, may affect several health conditions, including Parkinson's disease, depression and other mood disorders. Studies have suggested that tyrosine may help people with depression. Due to its role as a precursor to norepinephrine and epinephrine (two of the body's main stress-related hormones) tyrosine may also ease the adverse effects of environmental, psychosocial, and physician stress.
  • Buchu: This herb has been used in South Africa since long before colonization. It is still commonly employed as a tincture for a variety of ailments, especially urinary, kidney, and prostate problems. Buchu is one of the best and most useful herbs in urinary tract diseases that are related to increased uric acid. Its effect is due to its volatile oils, including limonene and diosphenol (a phenolic ketone), s well as glycosides and flavonoids. It also helps reduce bloating and excess water weight.
  • Uva Ursi (Bearberry): Bearberry leaves have been used traditionally by Native Americans and early white settlers as tea to promote flow of urine and to strengthen the bladder and kidneys. It was included in the US Pharmacopoeia from 1820 until 1936. The strong astringent properties of the leaves have led to its usage as diuretics and tonics. Because of their antiseptic action, Bearberry leaves have been used to treat kidney and bladder infections. Additionally, Bearberry leaves contain allantoin, a substance that is known to soothe and accelerate the repair of irritated tissues.
  • Chasteberry: Called the "Monk's pepper" or "Cloiter pepper" during the Middle Ages. It was a traditional European remedy for controlling and regulating the female reproductive system. Long used to regulate monthly periods and treat amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, it also helped ease menopausal problems and aided the birth process. Recent scientific findings show the presence of compounds which are able to adjust the production of female hormones. It is thought to contain a progesterone-like compound and is now thought to be useful in the Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea, PMS Endometriosis.

This formulation is a safe alternative to using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Nutrigenesis Approach Fem Support Tablet Ingredients and Functions:
  • Soy: Recent studies have found that the high level of isoflavonoid phytoestrogen in soy may stabilize the hormonal fluctuations during menopause and therefore help alleviate menopausal sign and symptoms, such as hot flush or hot flashes, relieve discomfort of thinning of the vaginal walls and help build stronger bones.
  • Black Cohosh root extract: Native Americans used this plant for women's problems, hence the Anglicized named "squawroot." This root has been used as relaxant, antispasmodic, and sedative. Between 1820 and 1936, when the plant was official in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia, the rhizome and root were utilized in U.S. as a sedative, for rheumatism, and to promote menstruation.
  • Red Clover: Traditionally, it is used for female complaints, as an anti-diarrhetic, and to treat dysentery. The biochanin A is another extract of Red Clover. It has been found to be a potent carcinogenic inhibitor.
It is thought to contain a progesterone-like compound and is now thought to be useful in the Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea, PMS Endometriosis.
  • Licorice Root: The roots contain glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar and exhibit a powerful cortisone-like effect. In China, Licoric root became a major tonic to combat fevers and as a remedy for infections. In addition, Licorice rhizomes and roots have a high mucilage content and therefore acts as an effective demulcent on irritated mucous membranes and posses anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Boron: Studies have found that boron enhances the absorption and balance of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. It also affects steroid hormone metabolism and brain function in humans and animals. Low dietary boron concentrations depressed mental alertness. Two studies also yielded evidence suggesting that boron can both enhance and mimic some effects of estrogen ingestion in postmenopausal women. Boron my benefit calcium metabolism as estrogen does.
  • Horsetail Herb extract: Used by Native Americans to help heal wounds. Horsetail contains highly absorbable silica and is utilized to promote bone growth and collagen formation, two very important functions for menopausal women. Horsetail has a high content of mineral in general, such as calcium, which promote the rebuilding of body tissue.
  • Betaine hydrochoride (HCl): The most common hydrochloric acid-containing supplement. Hydrochloric acid initiates the conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin - the enzyme which helps protein digestion. HCl renders your stomach sterile against orally ingested pathogens, prevents bacterial and fungal overgrowth of your small intestine. It stimulates the bile flow and pancreatic enzymes and aids the absorption of folic acid, vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Numerous studies have shown stomach acid secretion declines with age. This decline may increase the risk of malabsorption, osteoporosis, asthma, eczema, chronic hives, psoriasis, arthritis, thyroid disorder, chronic candida, gastrointestinal infections and parasites. It is estimated that 30% of those over 60 years of age in the U.S. have atrophic gastritis, a condition of little of no stomach acid secretion. 40% of postmenopausal women have low basal gastric acid secretion.

My Personal Experience:

A few months before the National Institute of Health (NIH) stopped early a major clinical trial of the risk and benefits of estrogen and progestin in healthy menopausal women due to an increased risk of invasive breast cancer, I myself was going through menopause. During a routine visit to my family doctor for physical check-up, my doctor was made aware of the fact that I was going through menopause. I asked his opinion on HRT, his answer was that he was not sure about the benefits of the HRT and that he was awaiting for the results of this clinical study by NIH mentioned above.

I did not have too much problem during the day. However, at night, I was suffering hot flash and very uncomfortable night-sweating. I would wake up multiple times during the night drenched in sweat. This interfered with my sleeping pattern and leaving me with insufficient sleep and therefore not being able to get up early in the morning. Since I did not want to take hormone pills or cream, especially after the bad news on July 9, 2002, from NIH, I was looking for alternative remedy. I started taking Nutrigenesis Approach Fem Support Tablet, twice a day. Amazingly, in two or three days, my night-sweating started to disappear. I continued to take it twice a day for about 3 weeks. Now I am only taking it once day. I no longer suffer from hot flash or night-sweating!
